When the Aztecs found Teotihuacán they knew very little about who built it and why but they incorporated the city into their society. What other examples are there of historical cultures finding ancient ruins, having no pretext for their existence, and then incorporating them into their own society?

In a Dan Carlin podcast, he mentioned that the Mongols essentially invented cleats by putting dogs teeth on the bottoms of theirs shoes for better mobility throughout villages where blood and entrails made it hard to get around. How do we know if this is true, and can you one up that fact?
